DAY HUNTING ON J&L's NOONEY PAW-PAW MOUNTAIN RANCH
********************************************************************************
JULY 2007 UPDATE: We are now booking for limited openings in October Archery Season and November-December, as well as the first two weeks of January 2008 for extended doe and spike season. Axis, aoudad and feral hogs are hunted year-round over feeders, which are continually maintained. Some very fine axis bucks roam the river bottom, and there is ample opportunity to take a fine trophy axis or aoudad at any time, especially during the hot summer months through September, or as a bonus opportunity during regular hunting seasons. Openings are also available for 2008 spring turkey season. We have chosen to limit numbers of hunts throughout the year to insure the place is not too heavily hunted. Axis are plentiful, which is why we can allow substitution of axis does for whitetails in our package during regular season. Large aoudad rams hang out on Nooney Paw-Paw Mtn, where we regularly observe groups of aoudad sheep at the mountain-top feeder with a telescope from our living room window! If you come, you can see them too. Rio Grande turkeys should be encountered in large numbers this year because of high rainfall and plentiful food supplies. It has been our experience that, if the weather turns warm early, gobblers tend to shut down by May, so you should book early for the best spring turkey hunt. We also have meat hunts for axis does and hogs available during several months of the year.
********************************************************************************
Bring your rifle or your bow (and your camera) and
come hunt with us! We have year-round
hunting packages available, whether you are interested in native whitetails,
turkeys, or exotics such as Axis deer, Aoudad Sheep or wild hogs. J&L's Nooney Paw-Paw Mountain Ranch is
remotely located in the beautiful Southwest Texas Hill Country, not far from
Rocksprings, TX in Edwards County. The
country is rugged and beautiful, with steep canyons in the "breaks" of the
Edwards Plateau, where the rivers begin their flow southward to the Gulf of
Mexico.
The property is bordered on the east by the clear, cool
waters of the East Prong of the Nueces River and a heavily wooded pecan
bottom. Because of the unique location
in a sharp bend of the river, wild game of all varieties naturally gathers
here, drawn by the abundant forage and social opportunities. Nooney Paw-Paw Mountain forms the west
boundary, overshadowing the river bottom.
Wild game to be seen includes native whitetail deer, Rio Grande turkeys,
and javelinas, as well as exotic Axis deer, Aoudad sheep, Russian and feral hogs; occasionally Black Buck antelope, Barbados or
Mouflon sheep, Fallow or Red Deer may be seen, though they are not plentiful. Several record book axis bucks
have been taken recently. Aoudad sheep
also grow to record book trophy sizes on the mountain side of the Ranch. There are no high fences, thereby providing
a fair chase hunt. We maintain feeders
and blinds to provide better chances of success. As participants in a Wildlife Management Plan with the Texas
Parks and Wildlife Department, we do not run livestock and strive to keep the
habitat as favorable to wildlife as possible.
We also limit hunting to only a few hunts per year, never "over hunting"
the land.
As a hunter at the Ranch, you will be pretty much on your
own, though we will provide assistance if requested. You will be staying in a trailer in the campground facilities near our
house. We will show you to the blinds,
provide information as to feeder times, and give advice. We always have recent videos of what we've
seen at the various hunting blinds for your viewing enjoyment. Given all that, your relative skill as a
hunter will largely determine your success.
Because we are not a high fence ranch, we cannot make any guarantees, but
your chances should be excellent.
**************************************************************
ALL HUNTING WILL BE DONE FROM STANDS OVER TIMED FEEDERS. NO WALK HUNTING OR STALKING WILL BE ALLOWED. IN THE CASE OF BOW AND TURKEY HUNTING, PORTABLE GROUND BLINDS MAY BE USED.

Axis deer have reddish
orange or brown coats, covered with white spots. We sometimes refer to them as the ?polka-dotted? deer. They have tall, round horns with sharp
points, and normally no more than three points to a side. Their horns may reach 30-38 inches in main
beam length. Size of the animal is
usually around 40 to 50 % heavier than an average Whitetail. They are indisputably one of the most
beautiful of deer to behold. The meat
is very low fat and deliciously similar to beef in flavor.
Fallow Deer somewhat
resemble a reindeer or caribou in body shape, but bucks have palmated, flattened
antlers and may be brown, white, or spotted in color. The Fallow doe in the spotted color phase does look somewhat like
an Axis doe in body size and shape, but the coat color is not red and is much
lighter, and the spot pattern does not come down as far on the belly as in the
Axis. We are not presently allowing fallow deer to be hunted, though you probably will see them.
Red deer or Sikh deer do not
resemble Axis or Fallow deer in coat color--they do not have spots like an Axis
or Fallow. Bucks' horns are similar in
that they tend to be round and sharp pointed, and usually have more
points. The Red Deer is closely related
to and resembles an Elk, though is a somewhat smaller version. We also are not allowing hunting of red or sikh deer at this time.
